About

Matthew Rozek (b. 1996) is a self-taught multidisciplinary artist based in Melbourne, Australia, primarily working in analogue photography. Navigating the world with neurodivergence and a rare, invisible disability, his physical reality goes unseen. This disconnect drives an active rejection of the material, finding refuge in the esoteric spaces he creates. While black-and-white film anchors his practice, his world-building extends into writing, drawing, alternative printing and working with unique materials. Working independently of formal training, Rozek uses these mediums not to document his environment, but to make visible the internal, spiritual worlds existing entirely beyond it.

Artist Statement

I look at the contemporary world and see a material prison. We are severed from the divine, consumed by physical manifestations. Recognizing my work can never rival the original creation, I could easily conclude the human soul is permanently lost. I will not accept this. Through analogue film and uncompromising light, I work to conjure the spiritual from the physical. My practice is an investigation to strip away the present and reveal a prelapsarian state. I create these images as artifacts so future generations might witness paradise, even if my own eyes cannot.
